Better To Tattoo 'This Side' Before An Operation. At Least It Won't Wash Off

Is putting your medical directive in tattoo form a legal way to do it? Because people are now tattooing "DNR" -- Do Not Resuscitate -- on their bodies, and that would not constitute a legal directive, would it? What if "DNR" is someone's initials, or an abbreviation of a slogan? I get that you might be leery of putting it in a document that people might not know exists in an emergency, but, still, tattooing, while it WILL get the doctors' attention, isn't really a binding document.
