It's The Only Thing They CAN Do With Their Hands That Won't Get Them A Red Card
-
Every time a soccer player screws up -- misses a wide open net, for example -- there's a universal gesture of reaction: they put their hands on top of their heads. This article examines the phenomenon -- it's been this way forever -- and it doesn't really answer the question of WHY they all do exactly the same thing, other than that it's "instinct" and "natural." How do you show disgust with yourself? I would just eat an entire half-gallon of ice cream, but I haven't played soccer in about 30 years. (New York Times)
