The One Time In Their Life It Might Pay To Be Older
-
Parents are always trying to find an edge for their kids, and so some parents hold their kids back from kindergarten an extra year -- yes, it's redshirting, just like college sports -- to give them a little edge over other kids. Oh, they say it's because they want to make sure the kid's ready for school, but you know they're looking at the competitive landscape. But there's no evidence of any long-term benefit for redshirting. And parents who try to game the system so their kids will "win" are a lot of the problem with the educational system. The issue shouldn't be age and it shouldn't be a competition; kids should be able to learn at their own best pace, but we never go with that. (Philadelphia Inquirer)
