Nothing's Worth Heat Stroke
-
The scandal at the University of Maryland's football program has a body count, and that leads us to Sally Jenkins' column in the Washington Post pointing the blame for 27 college football player deaths in 17 years at the coaches, who are of the old-school work-the-players-to-death mindset. She points out that since Korey Stringer died 17 years ago, NFL coaches no longer do intense workouts in extreme heat without precautions, and they've moved way beyond the "toughen 'em up" thing. College coaches are more "traditional," and she thinks that has to change. Are the days of Bear Bryant and the Junction Boys over? Not yet, apparently. (Washington Post)
