What You Don't Know Will Hurt You

You wanna get angry? You want an example of how bureaucrats and business conspire to hurt people and get away with it? Here's a Wichita Eagle investigation into how, for seven years, families in one area were drinking water contaminated by dry cleaning materials from a construction site and, while officials KNEW that there was a danger, the people weren’t told. It was a combination of incompetence -- the officials assumed that the chemicals, left behind on a site then used to build a convenience store, would travel in one direction while it turned out they went towards people's wells -- and just plain not caring enough to put out a heads-up and maybe even try to do something about it. People may develop diseases from this. And you know nobody's going to go to jail for it, because they never do. (Wichita Eagle)
