He Needed Money For A Diablo Sandwich And A Dr. Pepper

Have you seen this one about a New Jersey couple heading to a West Virginia casino who got pulled over for a minor traffic violation? The cop let them go with a warning, but took the occasion to seize $10,000 in cash and thousands of dollars of gift cards they'd won even though they weren't charged with a crime. He left them with $2. This is the dreaded "civil asset forfeiture" practice, which was supposed to let cops take property used in or the fruit of a crime, but is more commonly used by corrupt cops to take people's stuff for enrichment or harassment purposes. (Our present federal administration supports this, by the way.) The couple had to jump through hoops to get their money back, but the bottom line is that this is a law that allows cops to rip people off without due process. (Charleston Gazette-Mail)
