Everyone Sees The Story. Nobody Sees The Correction
-
The thing about the Internet is that once a story is out there, it's out there, and there's practically no way to take it back. That goes for Yelp reviews as well as fake stories, and so we have a Long Island women's clothing store that can't escape a mistaken bad review posted on Yelp by someone who mistook the details of a friend's story and posted that the place had refused a refund to the friend after a dress no longer fit because of a mastectomy. That's not what happened -- the friend bought a new dress and never asked for a credit for the old one -- but the negative review spread and now the store has people who've never been there giving them bad reviews and calling them out for being anti-cancer-victims, even though the poster has retracted the bad review. The corrections never get the traction the original fake ones get. (WCBS-TV-WLNG-TV/New York)
