He Forever Changed The Way You'll Hear 'I Heard It Through The Grapevine'

It did not end in storybook fashion for Will Vinton, the clay stop-motion animator who created the California Raisins commercials. Vinton passed away last week at 70, and this obituary chronicles how he went from low-budget Oscar winner to advertising sensation to, eventually, losing his company and ending up back where he started, low budget and teaching, revered by animators but back to square one. Which is a shame; you'd assume someone who had as big a hit as he did would have made it big for life, but I've known people who had great, chart-topping success but didn't make nearly enough money to be "set for life." That's how it goes more often than not. (Washington Post)
