How well do you recognize when something's a transparently phony attempt to sell you something? Because I wonder how many people, especially young people, recognize that some -- maybe most -- of the "social media influencer" photos on Facebook are not only ads (which I think they know) but are staged in a penthouse that isn't even theirs but rents itself out for photo shoots that, without explicitly saying so, are meant to make you think that the place is where the subject lives. Why this is important is that it feeds into the aspirations of the kids that follow these people and makes them think that a) the influencers are enjoying luxurious lifestyles while not actually doing any work, and b) this lifestyle, which is fictional for 99% of them, is attainable.
