If At First You Succeed...
-
This couple has been married 60 years, but they've married again, just in case. In case of what? Simple: They can't find the original marriage certificate. The records aren't there. The town doesn't have any record of their wedding. Neither does the county. The state says that either it never happened or someone who should have filed the paperwork didn't. The latter seems to be the case. Which, combined with recent draconian enforcement of citizenship rules, is a way to get to the topic: Could you prove everything about yourself if asked? Your birth, your marriage, your citizenship? What if the government decides that your passport, or a copy of the birth certificate, or your marriage license and certificate aren't enough? Because, in some cases, that's exactly what they're doing, and tie that in with the current wave of voter suppression attempts and none of this seems funny anymore. (WCAU-TV/Philadelphia)
