As If Disney World Wasn't Expensive Enough
-
In Manhattan Beach, CA, which is a fairly -- okay, very -- affluent town, the school district has an interesting policy. If you take your kids out of school for vacation, you're asked to pay the district $47 for each day the kid misses. It's not a fine, it's a "requested donation." The reasoning behind it is that if you're rich enough to take your kid on vacation, you're rich enough to pay to make up the money the district loses in state funding when a kid's absent. Some other districts do the same thing; some specify that it's for non-illness-related absences, and others make no such distinctions. Most people ignore the request. Would you?
