The fires are another reminder that technology is vulnerable to interrupting forces: Internet and cable service went out not just in the fire zone but in surrounding areas. And cell service was nonexistent when it was needed most. There is no adequate backup, not even analog land lines. No matter where you are and what natural or man-made disaster might befall your area, you probably should have some plans like battery-powered or crank radios and meeting places for the family set up in advance for when 21st Century communications fail, because they will. (Incidentally, Spectrum got service back up in the non-fire zone fairly quickly, but for a while there was nothing.) (Ventura County Star)
