It's Like Family. A Really Big, Unrelated Family
-
In 1985, a bored, lonely guy near Boston decided that it would be less lonely if he cooked Thanksgiving dinner for a dozen people who'd RSVP through a newspaper ad. That started a tradition. Today, he cooks Thanksgiving meals for free for anyone who makes a reservation, still through a newspaper ad (he's a Luddite of sorts, no cellphone or computer; in case you're wondering, he owns a vacuum cleaner shop), between 60 to 100 people fed every year. He pays for all of it himself. His son helps out with the cooking and does all the carving. His ex-wife has shown up with her new husband, who offered to play the piano for the gathering. As traditions go, this one's pretty nice. (Washington Post)
