Just Don't Order Anything With Romaine And You'll Be Fine

Oh, calm down. That story racing around the Internet on Thursday saying that McDonald's kiosk touchscreens are coated with poop are not really accurate. The accurate part is that there's bacteria on them. The truth is that practically everything has bacteria on it. You have bacteria all over you, and in you. Everything you touch is crawling with bacteria, some of which is poop bacteria. And it will not hurt most people, unless you have a really, really serious immune deficiency. What happened here is that a microbiologist/immunologist did a swab test of some London McDonald's kiosks, found bacteria, took pains to point out that the bacteria was nothing to worry about, and a tabloid -- the free paper Metro -- ran a story omitting the part about it being harmless. Which, by the way, was why, when I saw the initial story, I passed on it. You could tell it was a tabloid overstatement. At least, by now, you SHOULD be able to tell. (Washington Post)
