Putting The Quarters In The Machine Was More Fun Than The Toys Themselves
-
Holy... I forgot about this, but when I saw this article in the Bergen Record about the vending machine trinkets they used to sell at New Jersey Turnpike rest stops and diners in the '60s, it came rushing back: the magnetic little Scottie dogs, puzzles, compasses embedded in tiny rubber tires, junk that any kid would want. They all came in white boxes with the red "Mechanical Servants" logo, and the company STILL EXISTS, though they got rid of the machines years ago; they're the folks who repackage trial size toiletries into blister packs for resale. Those Mechanical Services things were always disappointing and also the highlight of any trip. Remember? (Bergen Record)
