A $1,000 Cellphone Should Not Be Considered ‘Disposable’
-
You know how some things can't be repaired by the owner or, really, anyone? Like how iPhones and MacBook Pros can't be easily opened or serviced? Or how some items are built so that if one minor thing goes wrong, like a bulb burns out, you have to replace the whole thing? The European Union and 18 U.S. states are considering right-to-repair laws that would let you fix certain items out of warranty. The manufacturers fighting this say that you could botch the job and render the items dangerous, but if you own the item, shouldn't you be allowed to take that risk? And should manufacturers be allowed to make their goods impossible to service except by themselves (at great cost)? (BBC)
