Anything In That Volume Can Be Trouble
-
Tuesday, January 16th is the 100th anniversary of Boston's Great Molasses Flood, when a 26-million-pound wave of molasses engulfed downtown. That sounds ridiculous and funny, but 21 people died horribly and buildings were destroyed. And, yes, you're asking why they had all that molasses: It was to be refined into ethanol for making munitions for the war, but the war had ended and they had all that molasses left over, and the company that owned it decided to keep the molasses and ferment it for rum to sell before prohibition would be in place. So, yeah, they were becoming rumrunners, and they apparently cheaped out on the tank construction. So, not funny, but an interesting story. (Boston Globe)
