Call Shotgun All You Want. Not Gonna Be Any More Comfortable

Here in the L.A. area, many of our carpool lanes are also toll lanes; carpools ride free, and others can pay pretty hefty tolls to ride in those lanes. But a lot of people cheat, so the Metro board is voting this week on a plan to make everyone in the 10 freeway Express Lane pay except for 5-person cars or vanpools. Yes, you read that right. Under the trial proposal, a "carpool" will be defined as five or more people in a car. Everyone else will have to pay. Doesn't affect me much, because I don't commute and I pay to ride those lanes most of the time anyway. But I'm not sure why they're penalizing people with two, three, or four in a car. (Yes, some people cheat by switching the little transponder box to three people to ride free when they're actually solo; how Metro will determine if you have five people in the car or not is unexplained, and those transponders don't have a "5 or more" setting...)
