Big Fish Want Big Ponds

Artemi Panarin is a star in the NHL, but hardly a household name, because he plays for the Columbus Blue Jackets. So his agent announced that he won't talk about a new contract -- Panarin will be a free agent soon -- until after the season. Translation: Panarin wants out. Now, why is this a topic for you, considering that even if you're in sports radio, you don't talk much about hockey unless you're in a Canadian market? Same reason you care about Anthony Davis demanding a trade out of New Orleans in the NBA: it seems like the best players just don't want to play for smaller-market teams. And if you're a hockey player piling up points in Columbus or a generational big man lost on terrible New Orleans Pelicans teams, you'd want to go someplace where you get attention and endorsement money and a chance to win a championship and be a hero. Which raises a question: Are small-market teams doomed? (Columbus Dispatch)
