If You're Driving Up There, Bring Tire Chains, Snacks, And A Bucket

Whenever weather closes the highways around L.A. -- yes, we get snow in higher elevations, and the mountain passes to the High Desert and Central Valley get closed -- I wonder what people do, where they go to wait it out, what that's like. One answer comes from up north, when dangerous conditions on U.S. 50 between Sacramento and Nevada left the highway a parking lot and one solitary restaurant intermittently open as the sole food and bathroom break spot for many miles. The result: chaos, with food running out because a power outage spoiled a lot of the inventory, bathrooms having to be reserved for customers because of a limited septic system, and one guy so upset when the place was closed that he took a dump at the front door. And that was not an isolated incident: Other places in the town reported human feces everywhere. It's astonishing how quickly people go feral. (San Francisco Chronicle)
