What Good Is 'What's It Worth To You?' When You Don't Have Enough, Period?
-
Reminder to those of you still against Medicare for All or any solutions to the health care problem right now: There is no free market, as far as patients are concerned. You need a medication, for example, and the laws of supply and demand go out the window, because there's no competition and none even desired by the pharma companies. Result: Even if you have health insurance, you may not be able to afford essential medication, especially if you have a pre-existing condition and it's one that the pharma companies have decided you should pay massive amounts for, because they can and nobody can stop them. (Think HIV or Hep C.) The elimination of the individual mandate is going to force premiums up for anyone whose health isn't pristine, and the only affordable plans will end up not covering anything. This column explains why "repeal and replace" was a crock, and why we're facing an even bigger crisis if this isn't fixed. Your ability to live and recover should not be dependent on either how rich you are nor whether your employer offers a decent plan. (Especially for those of us who can't get employer insurance.)
