Just Fly Ahead To Each Port And Meet The Boat At The Dock
-
I was never a cruise aficionado, but I do remember being told at a very young age that you don't want to go on a cruise out of New York or any northeastern port, especially in the winter, because the seas are rough and you're way better off flying to Fort Lauderdale or someplace like that and catching your boat there. Cruise ships are, of course, a lot bigger these days -- we live near the cruise ship port in San Pedro and I swear they look like massive skyscrapers when I come down the hill on 1st Street -- but in bad weather, even a huge ship can encounter problems, like the sudden 100 knots gust of wind that slammed into a Norwegian Escape ship as it left Manhattan Sunday. The wind was so fierce that passengers thought they were going to die. Things and people went flying. It was nightmarish. And because it's a ship and it's not like they can just turn around on a dime and come back into port to get the injured to hospitals, they had to make their way to the next port in Florida before anyone could be taken to hospitals. And the boat then headed to its next port on schedule, because of course it did. Moral: Just fly where you want to go and forget the damn boat. (WABC-TV/New York)
