Another school name controversy? Another school name controversy. This one's in San Jose, where Peter H. Burnett Middle School needs a new name because Peter H. Burnett, the first Governor of California, was racist and a failure. You're skeptical? You think it's overreacting? You want to use the "they were different times" argument? Well, he wanted to bar black and Chinese people from the state, suggesting that black people be flogged so they wouldn't come there and advocating for the genocide of Native Americans, so there's your racism, and he had to resign after just one year because he couldn't work with the legislature, so failure. And thus it becomes clear that the name is an embarrassment, but the question is who thought it would be a good idea to name a school after him in the first place. (SFGate.com)
