Hey, People Eat At Applebee's, Too, So What Do I Know?
-
This glowing CNN report chronicles the increasing success of Olive Garden, America's lowest common denominator Italian restaurant, which did great business -- over half of parent company Darden Restaurants' sales -- in the last quarter and has been growing like few of its competitors lately. Why? It can't be the food, or can it? The "never-ending" promotions apparently work, so more mediocre food for the money is one thing. They raised prices on those and added "stuffed" pastas, so there's that. And I'll add another thing: Sometimes, people just want something safe and familiar. Olive Garden is that. You get the salad and breadsticks, you get an edible pasta... you don't get fine dining or even something you can't make better yourself, but you get an evening out and it's adequate. Is that a better business plan than trying to do better? (CNN)
