Here's the story of the pink flamingo, not the actual bird but the lawn ornament. Yes, it has a story. No, it didn't come from Florida, it was a Massachusetts product, it dates back to 1957, it wasn't meant to be tacky (or realistic), the creator was a talented painter who happened to be working for a plastics company and tasked with coming up with plastic lawn ornament ideas, and, yes, John Waters is responsible in part for turning them from totally tacky '60s relics to kitsch icons. Also, there are aficionados who prize the authentic plastic flamingos made by the original company and designed by the creator, the late Don Featherstone. There, all you need to know about pink flamingos. Whether sincere or as a joke, do you put ornaments on your lawn? (BBC)
