Everyone Wants To Sound Like Everyone Else
-
This is an article about the science behind losing your accent, the trick being, possibly, to retrain your brain to recognize new frequencies. It's about having a "foreign" accent in an English-dominant world, but you can extend that to all the talk about how the old regional accents in the U.S. are going extinct (like the deez-dem-doze New York accent) while there are still plenty of regional accents around. Also, your "non-accent" sounds like an accent when you speak another language, you know. Bottom line: Unaccented English is the language of international business and travel, and if you want to get there, you might want to just practice as much as possible. And remember, as the article notes, it's only a problem if people can't understand you. (BBC)
