'Alexa, Stop Listening.' 'I'm Afraid I Can't Do That, Dave'

You know Alexa is listening to you. You knew that when you put Amazon Echos all over your house. But it's still disconcerting to realize that it's listening even when you don't use the trigger word. One thing that you'll get from this Washington Post article -- and it's interesting that the Post is running this mildly alarming article when the paper is owned by Jeff Bezos himself -- is that you can go to a particular page in your Amazon account and see and hear all the recordings they have, and delete them if you want. I did that and found that they had all of the commands we've done, plus stray snippets of conversation when the device thought it heard the trigger word. None of it was anything more than mundane, but you can see where this could be a problem. It's a very short step towards Amazon listening whenever it chooses, and recording things you don't want recorded. (Washington Post)
