Today In Controversies Manufactured For Filler On The Evening News
-
I can see this both ways, or, more precisely, I think everyone is insane, to be honest with you. It's about a public school where they said the Pledge of Allegiance and then everyone had to say "God Bless America." You can figure out the rest without reading the article: Someone complained, and the school stopped the practice, to the consternation of some parents. Here's the both-sides thing: There's no real harm in saying "God Bless America," but that's because, like the Pledge, the kids really aren't paying attention. It's automatic, and the kids' minds are elsewhere. And, yes, the God part is a violation of the separation of church and state -- it presumes fealty to a religious being -- but, again, nobody actually saying it cares either way. So, the defenders are right in that it's harmless, and the detractors are right in that it's a violation, and everyone's wrong in that it's all pointless. There you go, controversy solved.
