Oh, So Now It's DON'T Dress For The Job You Want
-
This article seems tailor-made (no pun intended) for me: It says that you're more likely to achieve success and stand out in a positive way if you break dress codes at work than if you conform. Wear sneakers and jeans instead of a suit and people will think of you as a maverick and cool. But it also helps to be a white male, because of the privilege inherent in being a white male. Women don't get as much of a pass. And it can really backfire if the dress codes are a serious, nobody-breaks-this tradition or a religious thing. Well, I've been showing up for business things in casual wear -- untucked shirt, jeans, sneakers -- for decades and I'm, um, okay, I'm not that much of a raging success, but at least it's been a while since I've been fired.
