Fast, Furious, Futile

Around here, there are people who drive ridiculously expensive and fast cars around town. Never mind that driving a Ferrari to Trader Joe's is pointless. These cars are built for driving fast, but you can't drive them fast unless you take them to a track or get out past Indio where speeds on the 10 freeway to Phoenix pick up. I'm mentioning this because there's a topic in whether having a fast, expensive car is ever a good idea if you're just going to drive locally, and because of this article about two people killed in a Lamborghini crash in Encino -- they were going 100 mph on a local road, hit an SUV, and careened into a tree before catching fire. It doesn't say if the car was stolen and the driver was escaping, or whether it was just a case of someone unable to handle a very fast car. I'm gonna say that 99% of drivers can't handle a car that fast and powerful. So why own it? Just to send the message that you're rich? (KNBC-TV/Los Angeles)
