It Always Comes Down To 'Because They Can'
-
Here's a total shocker that should surprise absolutely nobody: The California Energy Commission is reporting to the Governor that the reason California's gas prices are the highest in the nation and the increases have been way more than in other states is possibly because the gas retail companies are manipulating the market because they can. The gas companies usually claim that the price jumps are because of the seemingly annual fires and shutdowns at refineries in Torrance and Wilmington, but the prices don't come back down as fast once normal operations are restored, and the name brand stations like Chevron, Shell, 76, etc. seem to charge a LOT more than Arco and, of course, Costco. It appears they set the price higher because they know people will pay it, and before you say, well, that's the market, if you need gas, you HAVE to pay it if you're not near a cheaper gas station. As always, the consumer gets the shaft. (AP)
