The movie "Booksmart" had a lot going for it -- great reviews, a good and easy-to-explain premise, festival awards, buzz, and widespread marketing. So, why did it bomb at the box office? There are many theories, including blaming the studio's marketing and the decision to open the movie wide against "Avengers: Endgame" and other big studio blockbusters. But other critically-acclaimed indie movies have struggled in the last couple of years, too. Which raises the question of whether movies in theaters are going to be just superhero and action movies aimed at 18 year old boys from here on out. Are smart, funny, small movies going to end up streaming or nothing? What wil get you to the theater? (Los Angeles Times)
