At Least Move The Dates A Little Later
-
You know, in your brain, that food expiration dates are virtually meaningless, but you throw out "expired" food anyway. The head of an organic market chain tried eating "expired" food for a year and lived to tell the tale. Not just a few days off, either: Year-old tortillas, months-old yogurt, meat a month after the use-by date. And he was fine. The dates are more for the manufacturers to say when the food won't be at its best, and, yes, some things, like deli meat, unpasteurized dairy, and, like, potato salad probably should be thrown out. But we -- western society -- throw out a LOT of perfectly edible food. That's a problem. (Washington Post)
