Good News For The Bad Guys
-
Late Friday, the news came down that the Youngstown Vindicator, the sole daily newspaper in Youngstown, Ohio, will shut down at the end of August. Not sold, not going digital-only; it's going to end. And that leaves a sizable market without a local paper, and if you think, well, that's just some small market and just a newspaper, keep in mind that a) that's still a lot of people without a paper, b) newspapers, and/or their digital versions, are usually among the very few or only newsrooms with full coverage of local government, and c) if you don't have a paper with dogged city hall reporting, the politicians can do what they want and nobody will ever know. Oh, and d) this is not going to be the only newspaper closing. Democracy needs local news, and TV news and a handful of unpaid bloggers will not pick up the slack. (Cleveland Plain Dealer)
