July 1st is the 40th anniversary of the Sony Walkman, and it's hard to remember how absolutely revolutionary it was. In fact, you could trace the eventual, slow decline of radio as the dominant portable music vehicle to the Walkman's introduction. You could listen to whatever you wanted wherever you wanted whenever you wanted, as long as you had the cassette. You could even record your own mixtapes at home and bring them with you. Now, we stream playlists on our phones, but it all started when the Walkman showed up. (CNN)
