OK, let's talk about straws. First thing is that the recent death of the woman whose reusable, environmentally sound straw pierced her eye and killed her in a fall raises the question of whether those things are safe -- yes, freak accident, except that a rigid piece of metal can easily stab you if you trip and fall and the straw's held in place by the lid. This isn't a light subject; there are more people than you imagine who NEED straws to drink, due to disabilities of varying kinds. If plastic isn't available and paper straws are problems (see other story), what can you do? Are those silicone rubbery ones any good? Do they breed bacteria? Are they bad for your teeth? Were plastic straws really that much of an environmental disaster? (New York Times)
