Read The Label And You Generally Won't Be Deceived
-
In Arkansas, they passed one of those laws making it illegal to claim something is "meat," "milk," or "rice" if it's made from something else, like plant-based meat or cauliflower rice. (There are similar laws in several states now, and meat processors are pushing for it all over the country.) The folks who make Tofurky are suing through the ACLU, and they have a point: Yes, it's not "meat" in the sense that it's not from an animal, but the labels DO make clear that the stuff is vegan or plant-based, so it's technically the truth. Should true words be banned if someone could misread them? Shouldn't the law require that the labeling be clear rather than banning the words outright? (KARK-TV/Little Rock)
