Just Call Yourself A Consultant Like Everyone Else

I'm not quite at retirement age and I don't anticipate ever being able to retire, but if you are, maybe you can vouch for the premise of this BBC article about how recently-retired people don't admit that they're retired, telling people they're still working in their career field, or at least saying they're a "retired (name of job they used to hold)." It's understandable on the level of not wanting to feel useless or discarded, and it apparently only lasts a few years before they embrace the idea of not working. Would you feel useful and fulfilled if you didn't have a job? Because you should, but I can see how it would be awkward. (BBC)
