They'll Just Find Another Fee To Tack On. They Always Do
-
Ah, here we go again with resort fees. We've noted stories about the war against resort fees, and how they exist because people haven't fought back enough. Now comes word that at least one hotel booking website, Booking.com, is fighting back for travelers, and itself, by charging a commission on the fees. Aha, now you see why resort fees exist and are increasing. Hotels have to hand over commissions on the room rate, but fees are generally commission-free. So the fees are 100% profit. If more booking sites extend their commission to resort fees, there will be no reason for hotels not to roll whatever costs are covered by the fees into the regular rate. Let's see if this makes a difference. (Los Angeles Times)
