Save The Swingin' '60s
-
Remember Day-Glo paint? It was big in the '60s. It's still around (and many companies use their pigments in packaging), but there's something odd going on: Artwork made with it, and there were some major modern artists working with the stuff back then, is fading. Yellows are fading faster than the pink and blue. Some major works by major artists -- Andy Warhol, Frank Stella -- need to be rehabbed, and quick. One conservator at the L.A. County Museum of Art has taken it upon herself to try and save these pieces before it's too late. It will not be easy. You know, this reminds me of videotape -- have you SEEN the condition of '70s videotaped sitcoms lately? -- and all the talk about how digital media can erode. Our history may not be as safe as we thought. (Los Angeles Times)
