It's Humiliating Enough Just Being In A Jack-In-The-Box Drive-Thru, TBH
-
One of the problems with some laws meant to end discriminatory practices is that word doesn't always filter down to the front-line folks. And so we have a woman at a Jack-in-the-Box drive-thru refused service because she drove up to the window to order rather than use the speaker box, because she happens to be deaf. The clerk insisted that she could only order at the speaker and made fun of her use of sign language... all caught on video, so now Jack-in-the-Box is profusely apologizing and fired the worker while the woman plans to sue. One thing that came to mind: Some chains are outsourcing the ordering process, where you talk into the speaker and someone far, far away enters it into the system for the locals to fill. What happens to people who can't hear the speaker and need to read the lips of the clerk at the window if the clerk isn't even taking orders? (KNTV/San Jose-San Francisco)
