Good, Engaging Teachers Tend Not To Have A Lot Of This Kind Of Problem
-
So, this is a tricky issue: On the face of it, it would seem silly that California has banned school suspensions for students who talk back to teachers or fall asleep in class or do any other kind of thing that might be called "disruptive behavior." But then you find out that punishment for that is disproportionately against minority students, and as the son of a career educator in an inner-city setting, I know that a lot of that can be either miscommunication between students and teachers from different cultures or just plain, you know, racism. Yes, it happens. And there are always other ways to keep order in a classroom rather than suspending or expelling kids. (KABC-TV/Los Angeles)
