Something Something McRib Something

You may have noticed how several fast food chains recently announced that they're dropping items from their menus (hence the hue and cry from Taco Bell fans about their paring down their menu, and the stories about McDonald's dropping some of its more fancy sandwiches). This CNBC article explains why they do that, and it's a combination of something you could guess -- their research shows that sales aren't as strong for these items -- and something you might not think about -- the items being dropped take longer to make and thus slow down service, which fast food joints can't afford to have. Dropping some items increases service speed enough to make a difference in sales volume, they say, so that's why you see stuff disappear from the stores. The more you know.... (CNBC)
