You're Probably Better Off Brown-Bagging It Anyway

Amtrak is eliminating its dining cars on long-haul routes, the end of an era. They'll replace the reasonably elegant dining cars and kitchens and fancy china and white tablecloths with pre-packaged food, delivery to seats, and, on some routes, more diner-like dining cars -- no tablecloths, no china -- that themselves will be ultimately eliminated in favor of lounges. Train travel has become really spartan in America, but, then again, the number of people taking long-haul trains can't be huge. Yet, with that movement to fly less for environmental reasons growing, should Amtrak try to make the experience more attractive? (Washington Post)
