A Ventriloquist Was Once One Of Radio's Biggest Stars. Think About THAT
-
The passing of Jimmy Nelson, the ventriloquist responsible for Danny O'Day, Farfel, and "N-E-S-T-L-E-S, Nestle's makes the very best... CHAW-klit!," is a chance to ask whatever happened to ventriloquism. Okay, there's Jeff Dunham and Terry Fator, but it's not the same; when some of us were much younger, there were a LOT more ventriloquist acts. Edgar Bergen was a star of the '30s and '40s, Paul Winchell and SeƱor Wences and Shari Lewis and Willie Tyler... there were lots of acts and lots of variety shows on which they could perform. Is ventriloquism an anachronism? (New York Times)
