Can Bratwurst Be Historic?
-
Los Angeles County is in a little bit of a panic rushing to possibly declare Alpine Village in Torrance a historic landmark to protect it from demolition, because there are talks that the owners have been shopping the site and one developer planned to demolish the place and build a warehouse. Here's what Alpine Village is: a restaurant, a small market, and a cluster of cheesy German-themed shops, plus a massive, cracked-pavement parking lot and a weekly flea market. The "historic" part is, well, I don't know. It only dates back to 1968. It's a themed retail/food thing, it's a little run-down, and except for Oktoberfest, it's a little sad. Should "landmark" mean more than "it's been around for 50 years"? (Daily Breeze, Torrance)
