That Was How You Knew The Cartoons Were About To Start
-
Back after years of absence: the National Anthem on TV stations. Yes, those of us who remember when TV stations weren't 24/7 remember the sign-on and sign-off ritual, the National Anthem and the reading of the technical stuff. (The day didn't start for me until the Philly UHFs signed on with the anthem accompanied by scenes from around Center City.) Now, some people see this as a political statement, because there isn't a sign-on or sign-off anymore and, well, you know. But you can also see it as a nod to tradition. And other nations still require their anthem to be played; I see the Mexican anthem on the Tijuana/Tecate channels and hear it on the cross-border radio stations. So, tradition. (New York Times)
