It's A Rebuilding Year Anyway
-
Here we (potentially) go again: The Chicago Cubs went the route of a handful of big-time sports franchises in creating their own cable channel, this one called Marquee and formed in partnership with Sinclair (while it is possible that they'll have Boris Epshteyn and Sharyl Attkisson replace Len Kasper and Jim Deshaies, it's doubtful). They're charging a lot to cable systems for the new channel. So far, they've signed up some cable systems in Iowa, but the main cable operator in Chicago, Comcast, is resisting. It will be on DirecTV and U-verse, but it's possible that Comcast will hold out. And that would be similar to the Dodgers disaster, in which much of the Los Angeles market (including where I live) cannot get Dodger games on TV at any price because, for several years now, no cable system but Spectrum, which owns the channel, will pay the exorbitant fees. (I've also lost Laker games because my system didn't come to a deal for that channel, either.) More people are cutting the cord, and more people are resisting paying for sports channels they don't want. If your teams went this route and your cable company said no, would you switch? If you, like me, had no (legal) options to see the teams at any price, what would you do? (Chicago Tribune)
