The news that cigarette smoking is at a record low in the United States is nice, but what I will never understand is why anyone still smokes, period. It's been known for at least 70 years that cigarettes are linked to cancer (hence the term "coffin nails"), and the first Surgeon General's report linking smoking to cancer and heart disease was in 1964. Why would anyone smoke now, knowing that for most or all of their lives? (CNN)
