For a few years now, suburbanites have been putting live chickens in their yards, reasoning that it's a fun way to source eggs and it's natural and back-to-the-earth and all that. But this article from Australia points out that having chickens in your yard is also messy, poopy, smelly, and not even economically beneficial. The chickens poop everywhere, try to get into your house, don't lay eggs when you might need them to, and end up costing you more in feed and maintenance than if you just went to the grocery and bought some cage-free eggs when you need them. And if you make the mistake of getting a rooster, too, expect crowing not just at sun-up but at random times when crowing might not be a good thing. Dissuaded yet?
